Our organization

The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

 

The Enforcement Division enforces Alberta securities laws by disrupting, investigating and prosecuting breaches of those laws with a view to stopping current misconduct and preventing future misconduct. The Litigation department ensures the effective prosecution of administrative and quasi-enforcement proceedings by the ASC.

The opportunity

The Manager, Litigation provides strategic leadership and oversight of litigation, ensuring matters are assessed and prosecuted effectively and in the public interest. The role is responsible for leading a team of litigators in providing legal advice on matters under investigation and in conducting complex hearings, settlements, trials, and appeals.

 

As a trusted advisor and member of the Enforcement leadership team, the Manager, Litigation delivers well-informed, pragmatic legal advice to senior leadership, contributes to strategic and business planning and execution, and participates in key internal and external committees.

 

This position is central to building and sustaining a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing workplace in Enforcement. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong people leadership abilities, a collaborative approach, and complement legal excellence with effective management abilities and sound strategic judgment.

Key responsibilities include

  • Overseeing the management of litigation files, including file assignments, identification and consideration of relevant legal issues, provision of legal advice, obtaining and acting upon instructions and effective advocacy.
  • Leading, coaching, and mentoring a team of litigators, including providing ongoing feedback and training; regular one-on-one and team meetings; setting goals and priorities; evaluating of performance; managing human resource matters; and recruitment.
  • Overseeing legal research and collections.
  • Participating in management matters within Enforcement and across the ASC, including contributing to strategic and business planning and execution, budgeting, succession planning, resourcing, workload management, reporting, and employee development and training.
  • Representing the ASC on committees, task forces, and external working groups relating to litigation.
  • Delivering presentations to and engaging with partner agencies and stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will possess

  • A law degree and be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • A minimum of 15 years practicing law, including five recent years of litigation experience.
  • A minimum of five years of management and leadership experience, including coaching, developing high performing teams, leading teams, change/project management, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • A sound understanding of securities law, administrative law and criminal procedure.
  • Experience with administrative and quasi-criminal proceedings is an asset.
  • Strong verbal and written presentation skills, superior problem-solving and organizational abilities.
  • Confidence in managing competing priorities and scrutiny from stakeholders due to the high-profile nature of the work and its impact on the ASC’s reputation.

Note: The successful candidate will be required to provide a Police Information Check with results satisfactory to the ASC prior to commencement of employment.
