The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

 

The Enforcement Division enforces Alberta securities laws by investigating, disrupting and prosecuting breaches of those laws with an eye for preventing and stopping current and future misconduct.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Business Support, the successful candidate will provide legal and administrative support to Litigation Counsel in the Enforcement division. This role is multi-dimensional and requires an individual who can effectively prioritize multiple demands while being highly flexible and responsive to the ever-changing needs of the team.

Key responsibilities include

  • Drafting, formatting, and proofreading a variety of correspondence and legal documents in administrative proceedings and court proceedings (criminal and/or appellant), including: notices, applications, affidavits, facta, briefs and submissions, reports, and memos.
  • Arranging for service of notices of hearing, orders, settlement agreements, disclosure, notices to attend, submissions, and facta; swearing affidavits of service.
  • Coordinating with hearing witnesses with respect to hearing attendance and travel arrangements.
  • Working with litigation counsel to prepare proposed exhibits for administrative hearings and quasi-criminal trials.
  • Assisting the Collections Officer with drafting documents, arranging for service of documents, filing documents with the court, conducting database searches, monitoring limitation dates and preparing materials for closing a file.
  • Managing meetings and scheduling including arranging room bookings and handling travel arrangements.
  • Maintaining all current information in CRM for litigation and collections, as well as ensuring all documents are saved appropriately.
  • Performing other administrative tasks, including processing invoices, preparing expense claims, and closing files.

The ideal candidate will possess

  • Completion of a recognized legal assistant diploma, or equivalent experience.
  • Between 5 and 7 years of experience in a legal environment.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, including the ability to learn and master various database programs.
  • An enthusiastic and proactive approach, with the ability to take initiative and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated organizational, prioritization and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • The ability to exercise good judgment and use discretion with confidential information.
  • A detailed and accurate approach to daily activities and processes.
  • The proven ability to be flexible, adaptable and self-motivated.

Note:  The successful candidate will be required to provide a Police Information Check with results satisfactory to the ASC prior to commencement of employment.
