Our organization

The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

 

The Office of the Chief Accountant (OCA) provides expert knowledge in accounting, auditing and financial reporting matters to the Commission Members, the Chair, the Executive Director and ASC staff. The OCA also provides guidance to issuers, registrants and their advisers in those areas of expertise, as it relates to securities regulation. This division is involved in policy initiatives that relate to accounting, auditing, and financial reporting and provides training as needed to the professional accountants within the organization.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Accountant, the Summer Student will provide research and documentation assistance to the OCA team. You will have the opportunity for a unique work experience as two days are rarely ever the same. The ASC is responsible for maintaining the integrity of Alberta's capital market. We ensure a fair and level playing field for investors and oversee the conduct of market participants. As a summer student with the OCA, you will have an opportunity to work alongside experienced and talented professionals to: enhance your understanding of the capital markets, learn how the ASC and the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) operate, gain exposure to interesting issues dealt with by the ASC and CSA, work on important policy projects, and acquire an understanding of securities regulation.

Key responsibilities include

  • Maintaining a central repository of novel accounting and auditing consultations.
  • Assisting with projects including research assignments that require collaboration within and outside the OCA.
  • Assisting OCA employees with internal or external consultations on accounting, auditing, or financial reporting matters. This includes researching and summarizing relevant guidance and standards.
  • Other divisional duties as required.

The ideal candidate will possess

  • Enrolled in at least the third year of a business degree program pursuing an accounting major.
  • Basic knowledge of IFRS and Canadian Auditing Standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail as well as the ability to exercise discretion, judgment, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills that enable you to identify problems and facilitate problem resolution.
  • Strong creative thinking and analytical skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills (Excel, Word, Power Point, etc.).
  • A positive attitude and desire to excel and grow professionally.
